Tips to Stay Healthy and Active During the Holiday Season

Published December 8th, 2020 by Dr. Markson

The holiday season may be different this year, but it’s still a time when we seem busier than usual. Whether it’s shopping, travel, or socially distanced holiday events, exercise is often the first thing to get pushed to the side when it comes to health and wellness. Maintaining your health is more important than ever, so we’ve put together a few tips to help you stay active (and healthy!) during the holiday season.

Make a Plan to Move

If you know your busy week isn’t going to allow you to maintain your regular workout routine, plan ahead and reschedule whenever possible. If you simply can’t make it work, try setting your alarm just 30 minutes earlier in the morning. Slip your sneakers on for a brisk morning walk – not only is it a great form of exercise, but it can also help clear your mind and get your day started off right.

Speaking of walking, if you are headed out for some holiday shopping, make sure you park at the end of the lot to get in more steps and take the stairs whenever you can.

Be Mindful of Movement Throughout the Day

You may not be hitting the gym as usual, but you can still incorporate movement throughout the day to help you stay active. When brushing your teeth or standing in line at the store, do some calf raises. Bodyweight exercises like walking lunges or squats can be incorporated while vacuuming or doing other household chores. If you are hauling around holiday décor or grocery and shopping bags, remember to lift with your legs and if you can, do a few bicep curls! It might seem silly, but any bit of movement will benefit your body.

Invite the Family

Whether you are visiting with loved ones this holiday season or staying with your own household, everyone can get involved when it comes to keeping your body active! Organize a walk in the park, a stroll at sunset, or even a game of catch. Outdoor activities are a great way to spend time with the ones you love and stay active.
