Prevent Back Pain from Sitting at a Desk

Published August 22nd, 2023 by Dr. Markson

If you aren’t using good posture while sitting at your desk, you’re more likely to suffer from pain. Focusing on how you sit with a mind for ergonomics can help prevent back and neck pain from sitting at a desk for hours on end. And if you supplement good sitting posture with regular chiropractic care, you’ll be ready to make the most of your evenings and weekends

Good Posture Can Prevent Back Pain from Sitting

Whether you’re in school or working at a desk, good sitting posture shares common traits. If you are able to adjust the height of your seat, do so to ensure that your feet sit flat on the floor or on your desk’s footrest. Your knees should remain at the same level as your hips or lower, and your feet should be out slightly in front of your knees to relieve pressure in your quads and hips.

You’ll want to sit up straight and keep your head forward so that your neck and spine are in alignment. This is called neutral spine, and it helps relieve pressure that could create issues like a bulging disc. Keeping your back against the chair and head up and forward is good posture for avoiding aches, pains, and conditions like desk fatigue and text neck

If you sit at a desk with a computer, ergonomics will come into play. Make sure your keyboard and mouse can be reached while keeping good sitting posture and holding your elbows at your sides. Another great way to prevent pain from sitting at a desk is to get up and take periodic breaks. As a general rule, you should try to move around a little bit every hour or so as it can help relieve pain caused by sitting for long periods of time.
