Make Your Spine Your Valentine

Published February 11th, 2020 by Dr. Markson

Most people don’t think about the health of their spine nearly enough. Sure, it might be at the forefront of your mind if you suffer from low back pain or pull a muscle, but until that happens, how much love do you really show your spine. The truth is, it could use more attention.

Americans of all ages are suffering from issues related to spinal health and back pain and it is one of the biggest causes of disability in the world. It’s time to think about how you can prevent that pain, which is why we think you should make your spine your valentine this year!

Posture Perfect

Forget picture perfect – we’re all about posture perfect! Posture is something that you should be conscious of all throughout the day, not just because your grandmother used to remind you about it. Sitting in a slouched, hunched, or awkward position impacts more than how you look, but even how you feel and the overall health and wellness of your spine. Over time, practicing poor posture can lead to reduced mobility and flexibility along with pain and discomfort.

The key to great posture is to help your spine maintain its natural curves. This means holding your head up, your ears over your shoulders, your chest pushed just slightly out, and your shoulders back. If you’re sitting, it’s best to have both feet flat on the floor. If you are in a standing position, then distribute your weight evenly on your feet. If you need help with posture tips, just ask during your next adjustment at Markson Chiropractic.

Lift With Care

Not only is it important to remember how to practice great posture, but you also need to take care when lifting something. If done improperly, you may cause a back injury.

When lifting, bend at the knees and use the power of your legs and hips to lift the object up. Keep your back straight and hold the object as close to your body as you can. If you’re lifting something really heavy, don’t be a hero – ask for help – although this technique is important to use no matter what you’re picking up. If you aren’t careful, simply lifting a bag from the grocery store can cause problems.

We hope you have a very Happy Valentine’s Day and encourage you to remember to show your spine some love. Remember to take care of yourself, and the chiropractors at Markson Chiropractic can help you enjoy great health all year long. Click here to schedule an adjustment today!
