The Importance of Getting Enough Sleep

Published August 29th, 2023 by Dr. Daner

School is back in session in Broward County, and whether you’re a student, parent, or educator, it’s critical to start getting back into the swing of things. One of the best habits for adjusting to the new school year is making sure that you’re well-rested on a daily basis. Getting enough sleep at night is of paramount importance not just for studying and teaching, but for making the most of your time after school lets out each day.

The Importance of a Good Night’s Sleep

It might feel like it goes without saying, but sleep is absolutely essential for everything from studying to teaching to parenting. If you’re not getting enough sleep every night, you’ll feel more fatigued, more irritable, and less focused. This can cause your grades to slip, make it harder to meet deadlines, and leave you feeling unmotivated to spend time with people who love you. But the importance of sleep is even deeper—a lack of quality rest can increase the risk of facing health issues like heart disease and dementia.

How Do I Know if I’m Getting Enough Sleep?

It’s a safe bet that you’ve heard that eight hours is the ideal goal to make sure you’re getting enough sleep at night. But every person’s needs are a little different, and things like age can make a difference. According to experts, adults tend to do pretty well with seven hours of sleep or more. But if you’ve got a younger kid, they may need as much as 10-12 hours of rest per day to be their best.

Good Sleep Habits for the School Year

If you want to make getting enough sleep each night a habit during the school year, then you need to support that goal with other good habits. A solid, consistent bedtime routine is one of the biggest keys. Try to get into bed around the same time each night and avoid drinking or drinking when the time is getting near. If you’re in the routine of scrolling through your social media in bed, that screen time could be making it harder to fall asleep. Try reading a book instead.
