Escape Post-Holiday Exhaustion

Published January 4th, 2022 by Dr. Markson

Has your overall wellness and energy levels decreased over the past few months? This time of year, it is easy to fall into bad eating, exercising, and sleeping habits. Don't worry if you aren't feeling your best right now. Overcome your post-holiday exhaustion with our energy-boosting tips.

Be Active

Try joining a gym or putting on your sneakers and taking a walk.  You may think exercise will make you feel more tired, but the positive changes that occur with regular exercise increases the body’s energy supply and promotes better sleep.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking water before meals can assist in giving you a feeling of fullness, which could help prevent you from overeating. If you drink water in between meals, you will feel less hungry, which will result in fewer snacks between meals. Additionally, staying hydrated will help flush excess sodium, which will reduce bloating and constipation.

Sleep Well

When you have 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep, you will feel refreshed and alert the next day. As a result, your mood and memory will improve, and it could aid in weight loss or help you maintain a healthy weight.

Eliminate Sugar

After the holidays, if you find that you have an abundance of cookies and candy, throw them out or share them with friends, family, and coworkers. Keeping these foods within easy reach will only make it easier to overindulge.

Avoid Alcohol

Let your body rest by reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption. You can avoid alcohol for January by observing a "dry January". Instead of beer and cocktails, try carbonated water or kombucha.

Eat Clean

Getting your weight, mood, and energy levels back on track after the holidays requires eating more vegetables, lean proteins, fruits, nuts, and whole grains. Avoid restaurant meals and prepared foods since you cannot always control the amount of fat and sugar they add to your food.
