The Benefits of Being Active

Published October 13th, 2020 by Dr. Daner

During this crazy year of uncertainty and a drastic switch away from what we know as “normal”, people’s lives have been turned upside down with changes to their work/school/daily routine. People are working and learning from home at a rate that we have never seen before. This being said, we are seeing more and more people becoming sedentary and getting out of shape. It can become disheartening to see patients every day gaining weight, not feeling like themselves, and falling into ruts. Now more than ever, it is important to stay active! Let’s look at some reasons why…

Reasons to Stay Active

The first reason to stay active that comes to mind, though certainly not the most important, is it gets you out of the house! Being cooped up all day working or studying is not healthy for kids or adults. Getting out for a run first thing in the morning (or any other time, though it is HOT) has many benefits. It is healthy and awesome to “wake up with nature”. Hearing the birds and animals waking up, feeling the sun rising has a very powerful spiritual effect. It just puts you in the right mood to take on your day. It also gets you natural Vitamin D, which is an important factor in keeping your immune system strong (obviously VERY important these days). Second, and perhaps most obvious, staying active keeps you in shape. Lung, heart, and brain health are crucial, and staying active through cardiovascular activities or weight training will help you keep your body healthy. Another reason to stay active (and my personal favorite) is mood elevation. The endorphins released during an early morning workout before work will put you on another level as far as mood. It is like night and day when you exercise vs not exercising. In addition, sustained activity over time will improve your physique, which translates to increased confidence. Confidence is the key to life, as good things come to those who attract them.

In summary, staying active gets you out of the house, improves your immune and overall health, puts you in a better mood, and makes you more confident. These are always important benefits, and especially in this insane year that we are all going through together.
