Headaches and Migraines

Published August 17th, 2015 by Dr. Tokar

If you currently or have ever suffered from headaches or migraines, you know how debilitating they can be. Regardless of what you do to try to relieve your pain, the reasons behind these common conditions many times relates to the spine and it's alignment and posture.

The first step to take is making sure you're well hydrated. Dehydration can cause a list of symptoms, headaches and migraines being at the top of that list. You should be drinking 1/2 of your body weight in ounces of water (ie: 150 lbs person should drink 75 ounces of water). Grab a BPA water bottle from the store and start drinking! Your body will thank you!

Next, think about the repetitive physical stresses that are put on your body now and throughout your life. Posture at work and in general, bending your head over to play or work on your phone, sticking your head out to work on your computer... the pillow you sleep on, the support of the shoes your wear, the age of your mattress, if you are active or lethargic, old injuries you've accumulated in your life, etc. All of these things can contribute to subluxations. Subluxations are the chiropractic term for a misalignment of the spine which irritates the spinal nerves and diminished nerve function. If you have a chronic subluxation in your neck, you may be suffering from a nervous system that isn't functioning optimally, and your body's way of telling you that something is wrong is a headache or migraine.

Also consider the emotional and chemical stresses that may be contributing to your life. Are you struggling in a relationship or friendship? Do you sit in South Florida traffic every day? Do you worry about everything and everyone? Do you eat a lot of processed or "diet" foods with artificial sweetners and ingredients? These are all possible triggers for headaches or migraines. Learning how to deal with these stresses (or eliminate them) may dramatically help your health, in addition to having a properly functioning nervous system after your chiropractic adjustment!

Chiropractic care changed my life at the age of 15 after suffering from headaches for over a year, and not finding relief anywhere else. I was so inspired by my results that I decided to help people by becoming a chiropractor myself!
