Get Back on your Feet After a Fall

Published April 16th, 2019 by Dr. Markson

Neck pain, back pain, and more — slip and fall injuries are no joke. Fortunately, chiropractic care can help. Here’s what you should do after a slip and fall.

Assess Your Injuries

When it comes to sleep and fall injuries, the aftermath can be serious. If you are experiencing extreme pain or your moment is extremely hindered, seek out immediate medical care.

If you’re injuries don’t require immediate medical assistance, they still may be more serious than you think. It’s important to see your chiropractor after a slip and fall, even if your spine didn’t take a direct hit. Your spine bears the full weight of your body. Any changes in the biomechanics of how you move because of a banged up keen or hip, for example, can cause your spine to overcompensate, which may lead to greater issues.

With our training and experience, we will be able to modify your care based on the severity of your pain and bruising and get you back to feeling great.

First Things First…

The first thing you should do after the fall is take a deep breath. Before you scramble up off the floor, breathe and let your body acclimate to what has just happened. Taking a moment allows your body to center and ground itself, making you more stable when you stand back up.

Once you’ve returned back to your daily routine, you may need to modify some of your movements. Perhaps you have to take a few days off from the gym until inflammation and stiffness have subsided. Perhaps you can continue with your regular routine, but might need to adjust and use lighter weights or reduce your workout by a few sets.

The point we are trying to make is to listen to your body. So many of our patients rush to jump back into their normal routine without allowing the body to heal. Though it is true that pain doesn’t tell the whole story in regard to your overall health, it is important to listen to it. Taking a few days to lighten the load and slow down may prevent more serious injuries.

Heal Naturally

Swelling and inflammation are a natural part of the healing process. Rather than eliminate that part of the process, modify it. In the few days following your fall, use ice therapy. Put ice on the injured area for approximately 15 minutes, then remove it for about an hour and repeat as needed. You can also take advantage of natural anti-inflammatories like turmeric, garlic, and ginger. Chiropractic adjustments are also an excellent treatment for slip and fall injuries, as they help to speed the healing process along.

Slip and fall accidents are simply bound to happen. You can be extremely careful and still sustain a slip and fall injury. The good news is that there are things you can do to reduce the negative effects while improving the body’s ability to heal. For more information on how we can help, click here to contact us.
