Avoid Holiday Road Trip Back Pain with Chiropractic

Published November 12th, 2019 by Dr. Markson

The holiday season is quickly approaching, and that means many of us are hitting the road. As much fun as road trips can be, they are something people with back pain do not look forward to. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to prevent an uncomfortable drive. Here are our tips.

Get Moving!

Whether you have back pain or not, one of the biggest challenges of a road trip is the inability to stand up and move when you need to. Oversitting is a common cause of back pain and research suggests that to prevent back pain during a road trip, it’s best to get up and get out of the car every few hours. During these stops, take a short walk and stretch your legs and back. Planning your steps so you can enjoy a stroll through a local park or store can help prevent back pain while enjoying the sites. When you plan your trip, be sure to allow for these types of stops.

Get Plenty of Pre-Road Trip Rest

Before you get behind the wheel, you should be well-rested to ensure you can safely make it to your destination. That alone is reason enough to get enough rest before a big drive, but a lack of sleep can also increase your back pain. Research suggests that when a person doesn’t get enough sleep, there is an increased tendency to suffer from pain. Even if you are a passenger and think you might sleep during the drive, it won’t be the most comfortable sleep you can get. Falling asleep in an uncomfortable position will most likely leave you sorer than before. You should strive to get at least six hours of uninterrupted sleep on a daily basis, and though that may be a challenge, it is especially important before your holiday road trip.
