Avoid Back Pain This Holiday Travel Season

Published November 14th, 2023 by Dr. Hoder

It’s holiday travel season, and chances are good that you’re going to be spending some time on the road or the air in the months ahead. Whether you’re flying or driving to your destination, back pain can interfere with your ability to enjoy time with the people you love most. But you can take steps to avoid back pain this holiday travel season so that you can arrive ready to have a great time.

How to Avoid Back Pain From Driving

If you usually have a long way to drive over the holiday travel season, you know well that spending a few hours behind the wheel can take a toll on your back. Muscle stiffness and back pain are not uncommon after hours of driving, but you can set yourself up to avoid feeling sore and achy at the end of your journey by practicing good driving posture. Apply the same principles you use for workplace ergonomics, including considering hip and elbow placement and maintaining neutral spine position.

The best way to avoid back pain from driving a long distance? Take time out of your trip to stop off for some stretching. If you’re going to be on the road for hours, make sure you take a break every hundred miles or so to stop, stretch, and give yourself some time to decompress. This will mean that you’ll want to set out a little earlier so that you have time for occasional breaks, which can also reduce stress by helping you make better time.

How to Avoid Back Pain From Flying

The same basic tips apply if you want to avoid back pain from flying on a plane. You may not have as much to worry about on shorter flights, but if you’re going to be in the sky for several hours, make sure that you get up when it’s safe to do so and stretch out. You can also boost your back beforehand by stretching and exercising to loosen up your muscles and by remembering to bring pillows that support the spine.
