3 Tips for Helping Your Kids Eat Healthier!

Published May 12th, 2015 by Dr. Tokar

There are many natural ways to keep your kids healthy, especially by prioritizing fruits and vegetables in their diet. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamins and nutrients and provide antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals.

Free radicals are small, harmful molecules that can come from within the body or from environmental stressors such as plastics, pesticides, etc. Free radicals attach to the healthy cells in your body which can lead to cellular damage and disease. While your body can produce antioxidants to help fight off free radicals, it cannot produce enough to fight all the free radicals we encounter in our environment. Including fruits and vegetables in your diet helps to raise the level of antioxidants your body can produce.

Some children may be apprehensive to try new foods, especially fruits and vegetables. Try a few of these ideas to encourage your child to try new foods:

  1. Grow a garden together. If your child is helping you tend to your vegetable garden they will be much more excited to pick and eat the food they helped produce.

  2. Visit a farmer's market with your kids. Show them all the different colors shapes and sizes of the local produce. Encourage your child to pick a new fruit or vegetable to take home to try each time you visit the farmer's market.

  3. Cook with your child. Once you have your fresh produce, show your child how to wash and store fruits and vegetables. Teach them how to cut and prep the food for cooking or snacking.

I've tried a few of these tricks to hide veggies in my kid's food as well! What do you do to get your children to eat fruits and vegetables?
