Support Your Body By Starting With Your Feet

Published July 13th, 2015 by Dr. Hoder

In Florida it can be tempting to wear flip- flops year round, but summer is officially flip-flop season for everyone. Unfortunately, a lack of good support for your feet can lead to hip, knee, and back pain. In addition to regular chiropractic adjustments and exercise, orthotics or a custom spinal pelvic stabilizer (SPS) will help to increase the effectiveness of your adjustments.

Many of the misalignments that lead to low back pain begin with the mechanics of your feet. For example, a pronated foot (when the arches of the foot drop and the foot rolls inward while in motion) will cause your body to compensate for the imbalance by putting extra stress on the joints which can lead to spinal misalignment. Chiropractic adjustments can help with the misalignments, but over time your body can return to its misaligned state.

An orthotic or SPS can bring balance back to the body and alleviate painful symptoms. In addition, they absorb shock, which can help to reduce stress on your knees, ankles, and hips. Store-bought orthotics will help to provide cushioning, but it's best to have them custom molded to your foot.

If you're interested in orthotics, let us know next time you come in for an adjustment!
