Ways to Keep Your Kids Busy After School

Published May 9th, 2023 by "Dr. Markson

When you’re a busy mom on the move, balancing all your plates at once can be a struggle. That’s why it’s essential to maximize your time, which includes figuring out ways to keep your kids busy after school so you can focus on things that need to be done. By incentivizing helping around the house and coming up with fun activities for the week, you can build strong relationships with your kids, stress less, and make time for practicing self-care.

Ways to Keep Your Kids Busy After School

Teach Them a Skill

Just because the school day has ended doesn’t mean that learning has to stop. One way to keep your kids busy after school is to have them use that time to learn something new. Whether it’s how to draw a picture, write a story, or create a cool craft, you can give your children a goal at the start of the week and have them present what they’ve learned and made on Friday. This helps them pick up skills they can continue to grow and gives you all something to look forward to.

Helping Around the House

Practicing self-care effectively means not always taking everything on your shoulders. Even with a partner helping, it can be easy to get overwhelmed trying to keep up with laundry, cooking, and cleaning on top of everything else. Teaching your kids the importance of helping around the house lessens your burdens and teaches them the importance of responsibility. You can create a system that rewards good helpers—like a weekend ice cream date, a trip to the Everglades, or a road trip to Boca Raton. Whatever you do to encourage helping around the house, the result will be less stress and more time for practicing self-care by reading, meditating, and more.
