Staying Fit Without Sacrificing Your Summer

Published June 10th, 2015 by Dr. Markson

In case you haven't noticed the sticky heat and afternoon rainstorms, Florida summer is officially here! The excessive humidity and scorching hot sun can make working out less desirable than usual. In addition to clean eating, it's important to stay on the fitness train. So here are a few quick and easy steps to stay on top of your fitness during the summer:

1. Hydrate

Typically you should drink half of your body weight in ounces everyday. But if you're sweating like a mad-man(or woman), drinking more than normal is necessary as your body is losing more water than usual. Avoid dehydration by drinking 16 ounces of water before a workout, at least 4 ounces every 15 minutes during your workout and 16 ounces after your workout. I know that sounds like a lot, but you'll thank me when your muscles aren't screaming at you from dehydration the day after your workout.

2. Wear the right workout clothes

Get workout clothes that are light and designed to keep you cool. The lighter the color of the material, the less light it absorbs, and the cooler you'll be. Avoid the sweat-sticking-to-you-in-weird-places cotton T's!

3. Don't skip pool time for workout time

The days are longer now, which means there is more time to squeeze in an early morning or late evening workout.  Embrace it and use the peak sun hours to enjoy the beach or the pool! Working out when the sun is at its highest will dehydrate you more anyway so enjoy some rest and relaxation by the water.

4. Listen to your body

If the heat has you panting like a dog, it's time for a break! Sunday is a rest day for a reason. Fatigue, sore muscles, stiffness and a decreased immune response are just a few signs that you've overdone it! Give yourself a rest day and hit the gym again tomorrow.

5. Get the proper nutrients

Gatorade is not the only thing you should be using for your workouts. It's high in sugar and chemical-filled dyes make for an upset stomach and inadequate nutrition. You need food that will offer your sustainable energy. Eat a snack that has a combination of fat, protein, and carbohydrates about 45 minutes before your workout. Your body will break the food down slower making it last throughout your workout.

6. Get Adjusted

Okay, I’m a chiropractor so obviously this is something I would recommend, but ask yourself this: Why do most professional sports teams have a chiropractor on staff? If athletes are doing it, you should too! Regular chiropractic adjustments are the only way to keep your nervous system functioning at its optimal level.

Working out can be very rewarding especially when you don't have to sacrifice your relaxation time to squeeze in your fitness routine. Just remember to listen to your body and if you need help achieving your goals give us a call to see how we can help.
