Chiropractic Care for Children with Scoliosis

Published January 26th, 2015 by Markson Chiropractic And Medical

Scoliosis is an abnormal change in the curvature of the spine. Scoliosis is congenital, meaning that it is something you're born with, but not usually recognized until a child is in elementary school. Sometimes there are absolutely no symptoms associated with scoliosis, and other times a child's posture may look odd, as if their torso is leaning more to one side than the other. It can be accompanied by soreness or pain, depending on the severity.

Chiropractors can diagnose and treat scoliosis by evaluating the spine, taking an X-ray if necessary, and gently adjusting the spine. Strengthening exercises may also be appropriate depending on any weaknesses that are noted. Check out a recent success in our practice with a child who has scoliosis:

An 8 year old girl started chiropractic care in October, complaining of mid back, low back & knee pain. (Mom has history of scoliosis and had metal rods put in her spine). Patient has flat feet, which affects how she stands and we took one X-ray to confirm a 14 degree scoliosis. Three months later, after regular chiropractic treatment, adding arch support in her shoes and teaching her some shoulder/back exercises, her scoliosis was reduced to 8 degrees!
