Chiropratic for Muscle Spasms

Published July 19th, 2016 by Dr. Markson

Have you ever had that moment where you're straining to reach something up high, or bending down to pick something up and all of a sudden your entire back wrenches in pain due to a muscle spasm? You feel like you can't move and all you were doing was trying to get something off the floor. How could such a simple task result in such excruciating pain?

It wasn't just that one task. Your muscle was already strained to begin with and you just didn't know. You pushed it to it's limit and it stiffened into spasm to protect itself from any further damage. So muscle spasms typically come from repetitive movements such as heavy lifting or poor posture such as slouching in front of a computer. Often when your muscle has been strained over time, one sudden movement will send it into spasm.  When this happens, it cuts off blood supply, which causes even more pain, and usually leaves you sitting on the floor unable to move for hours. There are many things you can do to avoid a muscle spasm (or help to alleviate the pain from a muscle spasm that has already occurred).

  1. Get the proper amount of rest and stretch before going to bed and first thing in the morning

  2. Get massages periodically to loosen up those stiff muscles

  3. Muscles spasms are also thought to be caused by low magnesium and/or calcium levels so increase your intake.

  4. Drink lots of water. Make sure you're getting the correct daily amount.

  5. Visit your chiropractor regularly.

Chiropractic care helps to correct any stress to the nervous system so that your body can function properly. This will help to treat a muscle spasm or help to prevent it from ever happening in the first place.
