Chiropractic Care Can Help with Digestion

Published April 20th, 2015 by Dr. Tokar

When you think about going to the chiropractor, the first thing that comes into your head is probably relief from aches and pains that are recent or have been on- going. You probably haven't considered that one of the many changes in your health and overall well-being may be an improvement in your digestion.

If you understand the very basics of chiropractic and how the body works, this will make more sense! When your spine is out of alignment, it irritates the spinal nerves that exit the spine. A misalignment (also known as a subluxation) can occur from physical, emotional or chemical stresses that accumulate over your lifetime (think childhood traumas, poor posture, car accidents, sports injuries, repeated use of medications, sitting at a computer for work, etc.). When the spinal nerves are irritated long enough, they will stop functioning properly. Sometimes that may cause symptoms such as aches and pains, and sometimes the organs that are supplied by those important spinal nerves will stop functioning optimally.

Regular chiropractic care focuses on realigning the spine back to it's natural position so that the nerves can heal and function normally again. Chiropractic allows the body to function at it's best, and over time, may improve digestion, among other things! Remember that proactively maintaining your healthy spinal alignment (even when you aren't "in pain") throughout your life will help you feel better and live a better quality of life!

Other things to consider when thinking about improved digestion are your water intake (are you hydrated enough?), reducing the amount of processed foods you eat and increasing fresh (organic, if possible) fruits and vegetables, and also consider including a high quality probiotic and/or digestive enzymes. Our office carries Standard Process whole-food supplements, and the doctors can discuss the addition of either of these products into your diet.
